Set the Search Screen to the Classic Look

Set the Search Screen to the Classic Look

When I first saw the default search pane in Windows XP, my instinct was to return it to its classic look; that puppy had to go. Of course, I later discovered that a doggie door is built into the applet. Click "Change preferences" then "Without an animated screen character." If you'd rather give it a bare-bones "Windows 2000" look and feel, fire up your Registry editor and navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ CabinetState.

You may need to create a new string value labeled "Use Search Asst" and set it to "no".

How to Remove Windows XP's Messenger

How to Remove Windows XP's Messenger

Theoretically, you can get rid of it (as well as a few other things). Windows 2000 power users should already be familiar with this tweak.

Fire up the Windows Explorer and navigate your way to the %SYSTEMROOT% \ INF folder. What the heck is that thingy with the percentage signs? It's a variable. For most people, %SYSTEMROOT% is C:\Windows. For others, it may be E:\WinXP. Get it? Okay, on with the hack! In the INF folder, open sysoc.inf (but not before making a BACKUP copy first). Before your eyes glaze over, look for the line containing "msmsgs" in it. Near the end of that particular line, you'll notice that the word "hide" is not so hidden. Go ahead and delete "hide" (so that the flanking commas are left sitting next to one another). Save the file and close it. Now, open the Add and Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel. Click the Add / Remove Windows Components icon. You should see "Windows Messenger" in that list. Remove the checkmark from its box, and you should be set. NOTE: there are other hidden system components in that sysoc.inf file, too. Remove "hide" and the subsequent programs at your own risk.

Speed up your browsing of Windows 2000 & XP machines

Speed up your browsing of Windows 2000 & XP machines

Here's a great tip to speed up your browsing of Windows XP machines. Its actually a fix to a bug installed as default in Windows 2000 that scans shared files for Scheduled Tasks. And it turns out that you can experience a delay as long as 30 seconds when you try to view shared files across a network because Windows 2000 is using the extra time to search the remote computer for any Scheduled Tasks. Note that though the fix is originally intended for only those affected, Windows 2000 users will experience that the actual browsing speed of both the Internet & Windows Explorers improve significantly after applying it since it doesn't search for Scheduled Tasks anymore. Here's how :

Open up the Registry and go to :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace

Under that branch, select the key :

{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}

and delete it.

This is key that instructs Windows to search for Scheduled Tasks. If you like you may want to export the exact branch so that you can restore the key if necessary.

This fix is so effective that it doesn't require a reboot and you can almost immediately determine yourself how much it speeds up your browsing processes

Remove shortcut arrow from desktop icons

Here's how you can remove those shortcut arrows from your desktop icons in Windows XP.

1. Start regedit.
2. Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTlnkfile
3. Delete the IsShortcut registry value.

You may need to restart Windows XP.

IP address of your connection

type "nusrmgt.cpl" into the add box

Create a Password Reset Disk

Create a Password Reset Disk

If you’re running Windows XP Professional as a local user in a workgroup environment, you can create a password reset disk to log onto your computer when you forget your password. To create the disk:

1.Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click User Accounts.
2.Click your account name.
3.Under Related Tasks, click Prevent a forgotten password.
4.Follow the directions in the Forgotten Password Wizard to create a password reset disk.
5.Store the disk in a secure location, because anyone using it can access your local user account.

Changing The Internet Time Update Synchronisation

Changing The Internet Time Update Synchronisation

To change the interval that Windows updates the time using the internet time servers via regedit, navigate to:
1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services \W32Time\TimeProviders\NtpClient
2. Select "SpecialPollInterval"
3. Change decimal value from 604800 to a different value in seconds. i.e.: 172800 (2 Days) or 86400 (1 Day) and so on.

We don't recommend changing this unless you are on a broadband connection.

Make XP boot even Faster

Make XP boot even Faster

Microsoft has chosen a completely different path for XP and it's boot features by trying to incorporate as much support for newer fastboot BIOSes that are on most current motherboards. They built XP in such a way as to make it able to take advantage of features in these new BIOSes, and one of the coolest things is a small application called bootvis. bootvis.

Bootvis watches everything that loads at boot time, from the moment the OS begins to load just after POST (Power On Self-Test) to the moment you get to a usable Desktop. Some programs, most notably Norton AntiVirus 2002, suck up valuable seconds before you can actually DO anything even though you're at the Desktop. bootvis generates a trace file that you load and can then "see" a visual representation of what's happening. Every file, driver, hard drive read/write, etc., is recorded. You can then use bootvis to optimize the loading of files during the boot sequence. bootvis will rearrange the ways these very files are stored on the hard drive, thereby improving the boot time dramatically.

Tips for Online Gamers

You Don't Have To Be Rich To Be a PC Gamer

There is a common misconception that you have to take out a second mortgage on your house if you want to get a computer that will run all of the latest and greatest games. I don't know who started the rumor that you need to spend $3000 to get a gaming computer. The truth is, if you are smart about it, you can easily afford to get a high-end gaming computer. Here are a few simple rules to follow to put a gaming computer within reach.
Rule 1. Never buy the newest technology.

I know we all want to be the guy or girl with the newest toy, but you will never be able to keep up with technology. That top-of-the-line graphics card that came out today will be old news in just a couple of months and a new one will be released that is "so much better". Guess what happens to the price of the new graphics card you just broke the bank on? It dropped by about 50%. If you would have just been patient you could have purchased it for a fraction of the cost.
Rule 2. You only have to keep up with the software.

Rule 2 closely correlates to Rule 1. It usually takes software companies two years, give or take, to develop a new game. During this time there are new technology breakthroughs. If they went back and re-engineered the game every time a new processor or a new graphics card came out, the game would never be released. Another important factor is that they want the game to be available to the largest number of consumers. For this reason they do their best to make sure the game can be played on a wide variety of systems. Check out the system requirements for some of the more popular games. A 1.8GHz processor and a Direct X 9 compatible graphics card will run just about everything out there. Granted you might have to turn some of the settings down but it will run it.
Once you reach a certain point the added performance of the new technology is noticeable. For example, the Athlon 64 chip has been out for more than a year, yet there are very few applications that require a 64 bit processor. If you check out benchmarks on the new PCI Express graphics cards you will see that they are running games at 300+ frames per second. When you watch a movie it runs at roughly 60 frames per second. A game will still run relatively smoothly at 20 frames per second. Basically anything over 60 frames per second likely will not be perceived while playing the game. You will only see the difference in your benchmark programs.
Rule 3. Build Your Own Computer.

This is important for two reasons. First, you can be assured of better quality components when you pick everything out on your own. When you buy an off-the-shelf system, chances are you are getting a big name CPU and everything else is most likely generic. Do you know what motherboard, power supply, or type of RAM you are getting? This of course, is my personal opinion, I'm not saying every manufacturer builds sub standard machines, but from experience I've had greater longevity from the computers I've built myself. I've also noticed that you will often get little system memory, unless you pay a great deal more for it. You will often get 256MB of RAM with these base system. Windows XP will run, but likely with problems, on 256MB of RAM. It seems to be the most stable with 512MB or more. Other areas they cut costs is by using integrated graphics chips. This saves them having to put in a graphics card, but you will pay the price for it when you try to play a game.
The second reason to build your own computer is that you can cut your costs by stealing parts from your old computer. You can save hundreds of dollars by reusing the drives, case, monitor, keyboard and mouse. Plus, you don't have to worry about calling a technician to install RAM or a new graphics card because you'll already know how to do it.
How Much Can You Build A Computer For?

I just checked out some pricing and you can build a very nice midrange gaming computer for around $600-$700 using an AMD Athlon 64 3000+. If you can steal a DVD drive from your old computer and maybe the case, you can bring the cost down even more. You can build a high-end machine for under $1000. The internet is full of useful websites about how to build computers. Look around and you'll find all the information you need. There are several books published about the topic as well. If you follow these simple rules and do a little research you can enjoy all of the best computer games even if you are on a shoestring budget.

10 cool things you can do with a USB flash drive

Your USB flash drive can do a whole lot
more than just move data around. Transporting your data is probably
the most common use for a USB
flash drive. But there’s a world of
other things you can do with these
handy pocket-size drives. Here are
10 ways you can use that USB flash drive to do more than just move
data.
1: Run portable applications
In addition to storing your data, you
can run portable applications from a
USB flash drive. For example,
OpenOffice, which is a complete office
suite that includes a word processor,
spreadsheet, presentation tool, drawing package, and database, is
available as a portable application.
Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird are
also available as portable applications.
When you combine the office suite
with the ability to surf the Web and check email, you’ll be able to take your
most vital computing applications with
you wherever you go — right in your
pocket. If that’s not enough, you can choose
other applications to install on your
USB flash drive from PortableApps.com
(Figure A). You can even install an
entire prepackaged suite of
applications that includes such things as an audio player, games, an antivirus
utility, and a handy menu system Figure A The PortableApps.com suite comes
with a menu system to allow you to
easily access your portable
applications
2: Boot an operating system
If you want to do more than just run
your own applications, you might
want to consider booting an entire
operating system from your USB flash
drive. You can boot either Windows or
Linux from a USB flash drive; however, the process is not an exact science
and you may be in for a technical
adventure. Fortunately, there are some guides
you can follow. To learn how to boot
Windows XP from a USB flash drive, see
the article Creating a bootable USB
flash drive for Windows XP. To learn
how to boot a version of Linux from a USB flash drive, see the article Puppy
Linux teaches an old dog new tricks. 3: Connect to a wireless network
If
you have a wireless network, you
can use the Wireless Network Setup
Wizard in Windows XP or the Windows
Connect Now (WCN) feature built into
Vista to save wireless network
configuration information to a USB flash drive. You can then use your
drive to quickly and easily connect
another computer or a WCN-
compatible device, such as a router or
printer, to your wireless network. To
learn more about using the Wireless Network Setup Wizard, see the Help
And Support Center, which is
accessible from Windows XP’s Start
menu. To learn more about using the
Windows Connect Now feature, see
Windows Help And Support, which is accessible from Windows Vista’s Start
menu.
4: Create a password reset disk A password reset disk can really come
in handy if you forget the password to
your user account on a Windows
system that is not a part of a domain. If
you find yourself in that situation, you
can use the password reset disk to reset your password and quickly get
back into your user account. In
Windows Vista, you can use USB flash
drive rather than a floppy disk as a
password reset disk (Figure B). For
details on how to do so, see the article Create a Vista password reset disk
using a USB flash drive. Figure B You can use your USB flash drive as
a password reset disk. 5: Boost performance If you’re running Windows Vista, you
can use a USB flash drive to speed up
your system with the ReadyBoost
technology. ReadyBoost can use the
storage space on a USB Flash drive as
an additional memory cache to aid the memory cache on your hard disk. And
because flash memory is more
responsive than a hard disk, with its
physical moving parts, the memory
cache provided by ReadyBoost can
significantly improve system responsiveness. Using ReadyBoost is easy. You just
insert your USB flash drive into your
Vista system and follow the onscreen
prompts to configure and use
ReadyBoost. If you want more details,
check out the article How SuperFetch and ReadyBoost work together. 6: Manage it If all you really want to do with your
USB flash drive is transport data, and
you’re running Windows XP, you can
do so more efficiently with the
Microsoft USB Flash Drive Manager
(Figure C). Once you have installed this manager, you can easily copy files to
and from your drive, back up and
restore the entire flash drive to and
from your hard disk, change the drive
label, and even create an autorun.inf
file to launch Drive Manager automatically when you plug in the
drive. To learn more about and
download the USB Flash Drive Manager
visit the Microsoft TechNet Magazine
site. Figure C Microsoft USB Flash Drive Manager
provides you with a host of
features, such as drive backup. 7: Use it as an MP3 player Would you like to be listening to music
when you’re using a computer at the
office, but you don’t have an MP3
player? If so, you can use a USB flash
drive as an MP3 player along with
Windows Media Player and a set of headphones. Just copy your MP3 files
to your USB flash drive, plug it into
your computer, and direct Windows
Media Player to build a library of the
songs on your drive. You can use all of
Windows Media Player’s playback features, such as playlists and
favorites, to easily customize your
music listening experience. And best
of all, you won’t have to worry about
running low on battery power. 8: Password-protect it If you use a USB flash drive to
transport sensitive data that you
would prefer to protect from prying
eyes, should you lose the drive, Rohos
Mini Drive (Figure D) can safeguard
that data. This security tool allows you to create a secret partition on the drive
and then password-protect/encrypt
that partition, thus protecting any
documents you copy to that partition
via the utility’s file manager. You can
download (and read a review of) Rohos Mini Drive at Download.com. Figure D Using Rohos Mini Drive, you can
secure sensitive files on your USB
flash drive. 9: Run a Web site from it If you are a Web developer, you may
be interested to know that with
Server2Go, you can easily run a Web
server that supports Apache, PHP,
MySQL, and Perl right from a USB flash
drive. You can use Server2Go right out of the box without any installation. It
runs on all versions of Windows,
supports most common browsers, and
is completely free. To a developer, the
benefits of having a portable Web
server on a USB drive are numerous. For example, imagine being able to
carry a live Web site demo into a sales
pitch meeting. For more information
about this package, visit the Server2Go
site. 10: Lock your PC Have you ever seen a movie in which a
person in some secret government
installation simply inserts and removes
a card to log in and log out of a PC? If
you thought that idea was cool, you’ll
definitely want to investigate Predator (Figure E). Once installed and
configured, this little freeware utility
will allow you to turn a USB flash drive
into a key you can use to lock and
unlock your computer. Figure E With Predator, you can use a USB
flash drive as a key to lock and
unlock your computer. While the USB flash drive is connected
to your computer, everything works
as it normally would. Once you remove
the USB flash drive, your computer is
locked down — the keyboard and
mouse are disabled and the screen darkens. To unlock your computer,
you just plug in the USB flash drive and
the computer will be unlocked and
you can begin using it. To learn more
about Predator, and/or to download
it, visit the developer’s Web site.

Use Trial Software Forever

Now we wil download stuff almost daily. New products pop out so often. You can use any software forever you want. You can download trial version, right. Trial version expires after some days. You can stop that expiration. You can tell trial version of the software to not count days or do not bother about time. The software will stay and keep working like original software forever and will not expire or cease to work. You do not have to change your system clock. This little software does it all.

Time Stopper is the software which can stop the time for try out version software. When you stop the time you can use your try-out versions forever. When you stop the time of a try-out version using this Time Stopper it works via this Time Stopper. Real time and date run normally on your system. You can use any number of try-out version softwares with this software.

How it Works:

Open Time Stopper
Browse and select .exe of required trial software
Choose the new date (Any date which occurs in between your trial software time period before expiration, suggestion: set it to two days before trial software expiration date.)
Choose any time
Click open software on your selected date

If you wish to create an icon for your modified trial software and do not want to open Time stopper every time then use last button in software to create new icon. open that trial software after that from that newly created icon always otherwise it can expire.

This is 100% FREE and WORKING!!!

Do it yourself, Then you will get to know...

An Indian found that nobody can create a FOLDER anywhere on the computer which can be named as "CON". This is something funny and inexplicable. At Microsoft the whole Team, couldn't answer why this happened!

TRY IT NOW, IT WILL NOT CREATE A "CON" FOLDER !

#2

For those of you using Windows (except windows 7 & Vista), do the following:

1. Open an empty notepad file

2. Type "Bush hid the facts" (without the quotes)

3. Save it as whatever you want.

4. Close it, and re-open it.

Notice the weird bug? No one can explain why this happens.

How To Update Windows-7 Which Is Not Genuine

Hi Friends!! So many of us are using Windows7 Operating System which is Not Genuine. Generally we will enable Automatic Updates in Windows7, then it will download and install updates from microsoft and after some days it will say that our Operating System is Not Genuine and our system will become useless untill we install fresh O.S again. So here is the solution. Just follow the below procedure and then if you download and install Automatic Updates also our Operating System wont get detected as duplicate.

(i) At first open control panel from the start menu. Then a new window will open called "control panel" as like in the below image :

(ii) Now click on "System and Security" as shown in the image below :

(iii) Now Click on "Windows Update" as shown in the image below :

(iv) Now click on "Change Settings" option which is located in left side column as shown in the image below :

(v) Now Below the "Important Updates" sub-menu There Will be Four options present. Select The Third Option Called "Check For Updates But Let Me Choose Whether To Download And Install Them" and Click on OK button as shown in the image below:

(vi) Now that window will be closed and the previous window will open. In the Left Column of the window click on the option called "Check For Updates" as shown in the image below :

(vii) Now windows Will start checking for the updates available as shown in the image below:
(viii) wait till it completes checking for updates. After completion of checking it will show the number of important updates available as shown in the image below:

(ix) Now click on that button which is showing 38 important updates are available as like in the above image. Then a list of available updates will be displayed  as shown in the image below:

(x) Now Find out the update Which is named as "Update For Windows 7 (KB971033)" which is already unchecked as shown in the image below :

(xi) Now Right Click on that name of the update. You Will get two options called (i) Copy Details
                                                                                                                                (ii) Hide Update
Now click on Hide Update option as shown in the image below :

(xii) Now You can select all the other updates or which ever you want and click on OK button as shown in the image below:

(xiii) Now Comes the final step. Now click on "Install Updates" and the selected updates will now download and will install as shown in the image below :

After the installation it will ask for system reboot, then reboot the system.

The update which we have hidden is the update that detects our operating system(o.s) is not genuine. So we wont Download that update anymore.
